If you want to trace a train journey on your map, you no longer have to settle for a straight line or trace it manually. The "Follow route" option can now snap your train lines to real railway tracks.
It works for conventional trains, high-speed lines (TGV, Shinkansen, etc.), trams and subways. The routing uses railway data from the OpenStreetMap project, so it covers railways worldwide.
Follow rail tracks
This option requires having a Premium account (at least while you trace the lines, then they'll stay the same once your paid account expires).
- Open your administration map
- Select the spot at the end of your train journey
- Click on Edit
- Click on Line: Follow route
The line is traced automatically along the railway tracks between your two spots, and the "Follow" box at the top of the map shows Rail tracks selected.
- Optionally: drag the purple line to choose a different route
- Once you are done, click on Save
Note: you can click on Edit and click on the calculate icon inside the Distance field to add a distance
If no route is found
Most of the time, a point is too far from a railway — a city center can be quite far from its train station, for example — or it snapped onto an isolated tram or metro line. Move the start or end point closer to the tracks your train actually used (a train station is a safe bet) and the route will recalculate. If nothing works, you can edit the line manually as a last resort.
